PANYNJ – Brooklyn-Port Authority Marine Terminal-Piers 9A, 9B, and Wharf B Priority Marine Rehabilitation, Brooklyn, NY
In a significant step towards revitalizing Brooklyn’s waterfront, COASTAL successfully completed a comprehensive rehabilitation project at the Brooklyn-Port Authority Marine Terminal, specifically targeting Piers 9A, 9B, and Wharf B. This initiative was designed to strengthen and preserve the structural integrity of these vital marine infrastructures, ensuring their continued operation and contribution to the region’s economy.
The project involved extensive repairs to the existing infrastructure, including the restoration of over 300 piles. These crucial components of the piers’ foundation were carefully encapsulated to protect them from further damage and ensure their longevity. The COASTAL Team undertook the repair of 400 square feet of girders, a task that involved precise concrete forming, pouring, and the meticulous repair of steel bulkheads. This phase included underwater welding to attach steel plate patches, followed by the application of epoxy compounds to recoat the surfaces, providing an additional layer of protection against the elements.
COASTAL’s team of divers and dockbuilders provided the underwater construction expertise to enable a successful project in a busy container ship port.
Demolition work was also a key part of this project, involving the removal of old concrete encasements, steel reinforcements, timbers, and concrete beams. This process was essential for clearing the way for new materials and techniques that would bring the piers up to current standards of safety and durability.
Throughout the duration of this project, COASTAL played a critical role in enhancing the Brooklyn-Port Authority Marine Terminal’s infrastructure. By applying advanced repair techniques and materials, we have ensured that Piers 9A, 9B, and Wharf B are well-prepared to serve New York’s maritime needs for years to come. This effort not only supports the local economy but also contributes to the ongoing development and beautification of Brooklyn’s waterfront area.
