U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service – Long Island NWR Complex – Hurricane Sandy Debris Removal, NY
COASTAL took on a complex role in aiding the recovery of the Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex, a collection of eight national wildlife refuges and one wildlife management area, for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in response to the devastation and extensive debris left behind by Hurricane Sandy.
Prior to removing the debris, our Project Team performed reconnaissance, assessing the damage via airboat, motorboat or low ground pressure amphibious equipment. Our task was to meticulously remove the debris scattered across these crucial habitats, which included the Lido Beach Wildlife Management Area, Seatuck National Wildlife Refuge, and Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge, a protected habitat for migratory songbirds, shorebirds and waterfowl.
COASTAL’s efforts were aimed at not only cleaning up the aftermath but also at preserving the natural environment, ensuring these refuges could continue to serve as havens for wildlife and places of natural beauty for the public. This initiative highlights our dedication to environmental preservation and our swift action to support National Wildlife Refuges in the face of disaster.
