USACE New York District – Rehabilitation of Shore Protection, Asharoken, Suffolk County, NY

In response to the urgent need for enhanced coastal protection in Asharoken, Suffolk County, NY. COASTAL embarked on a critical shore reinforcement project. This initiative was designed to bolster the shoreline’s defenses against flooding and prevent future flood damage, a necessity highlighted by the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.

Our approach focused on strengthening the existing seawall and surrounding areas. Key activities included the installation of durable steel sheet piles and the strategic placement of armor stones. These stones, three of which had been previously displaced by the force of Hurricane Irene, were carefully unearthed from the sand and reset to their original positions to reinforce the seawall’s crest.

Additionally, we undertook the task of replacing outdated timber caps and brackets along a 1,500 linear foot stretch with new, robust metal caps. This not only improved the structural integrity of the seawall but also enhanced its longevity.

The project also involved meticulous work with the existing splash stones. We removed them, along with the plywood backing that had been used for geogrid attachment, and then replaced the underlying sand material. After resetting the geogrid and ensuring proper placement, we created space for the installation of new steel capping.

Through these carefully planned and executed measures, our project aimed to significantly reduce the risk of flooding in Asharoken, offering residents and the environment alike a stronger, more resilient shoreline. This effort underscores our commitment to safeguarding communities and ecosystems against the challenges posed by natural disasters and climate change.
