USACE New York District – Hurricane Sandy Debris Removal, Fire Island, NY

COASTAL spearheaded a vital debris removal project on Fire Island, NY, for the USACE New York District following Hurricane Sandy. This effort required the mobilization of 455 local individuals, creating significant employment opportunities within the community. Together, we successfully cleared approximately 30,000 cubic yards of debris left by the storm, overcoming considerable logistical and weather-related obstacles.

The Project Team performed curbside segregation of household garbage, construction debris, vegetative debris, household hazardous wastes, white goods, sand and electronics prior to removal. Vegetative debris was hauled to a reduction site, where it was then chipped and left to be reused by residents. Construction/demolition and other debris was hauled to an approved landfill, or processed for recycling by grinding, bailing, crushing or other approved methods. In total, approximately 1,177 CY of vegetative debris and 3,823.04 tons of C&D were collected and barged for disposal.

All collected debris was efficiently barged away from the island for proper disposal, ensuring the cleanup met its strict deadline. This project not only restored the environmental health of Fire Island but also demonstrated COASTAL’s commitment to community involvement and resilience in the face of natural disasters.
