USACE New York District – Jacob Riis Park Site Management and Debris Processing, Queens, NY
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy’s devastation, COASTAL managed a Temporary Storage Site (TSS) for a critical debris management operation at Jacob Riis Park in Queens, NY for the USACE New York District. Our mission was to tackle the formidable challenge of handling over 200,000 tons of debris that had accumulated in the area, turning a natural disaster cleanup into an organized and efficient operation.
The COASTAL Project Team was tasked with the comprehensive management of various debris types, including construction and demolition debris such as: boardwalk timbers, and other materials such as clean fill, sand, and concrete rubble and white goods. Sand was sifted and returned to beaches, and concrete rubble was reduced for beneficial reuse. By effectively receiving, staging, processing, reducing, and ultimately removing this debris, COASTAL played a key role in the recovery efforts, paving the way for the restoration of the community and the environment affected by Hurricane Sandy.
