National Park Service – Design-Build Bulkhead Repair and Replacement at Riis Landing, Gateway National Recreation Area, Jamaica Bay, NY

This project marks COASTAL’s third consecutive collaboration with the National Park Service at this site, underscoring our commitment to preserving and enhancing our National Parks.

The focus of this project was the repair and replacement of the south and west sides of the existing bulkhead, along with the refurbishment of adjacent pavement areas. The COASTAL Team was tasked with designing a new bulkhead that would stand the test of time, preparing the site, and conducting necessary soil removal and excavation. The comprehensive scope of work also included the dredging of the basin to improve water flow and the reclamation of the project area to its natural state.

An important aspect of this project was the removal and proper disposal of a derelict wooden pier and the remnants of old bulkheads and wave screens along the western edge of the basin. These actions were crucial in clearing the way for the new construction and ensuring the environmental integrity of the area.

By implementing advanced engineering solutions and environmental best practices, we successfully restored the bulkhead at Riis Landing, enhancing the resilience and accessibility of this cherished recreational spot. This project not only improved the safety and functionality of the area, but also contributed to the ongoing efforts to preserve the natural beauty and historical significance of the Gateway National Recreation Area.
