NAVFAC NWS Earle – Pile Encapsulation, Leonardo, NJ
COASTAL completed a vital project at the Naval Weapons Station Earle in Leonardo, New Jersey, aimed at enhancing the structural integrity of a critical naval dock. This dock, distinguished by its “Wye” platform, plays an essential role in supplying munitions to U.S. Navy ships, underscoring the importance of its maintenance and rehabilitation.
The project focused on the encapsulation of 144 wooden pilings, which are fundamental to the dock’s support structure. Our approach involved the careful removal of the existing timber piles and the installation of new rebar cages. These cages were then encased in stay-in-place fiberglass jackets, a modern solution that provides both durability and longevity. Concrete was meticulously pumped into each form to ensure a solid and robust foundation for the pilings.
In addition to the piling work, we conducted repairs on the concrete deck of the dock to address wear and ensure a safe, operational surface for naval activities. This comprehensive approach to dock rehabilitation not only enhances its functionality but also extends its service life.
Executing this project required innovative techniques and specialized skills, particularly the use of professional dive teams. These teams were instrumental in setting the cages and jackets, performing their tasks with precision in the challenging underwater environment 2 miles off the shoreline.
Throughout this project, COASTAL contributed to the operational readiness and infrastructure resilience of the Naval Weapons Station Earle. Our work ensures that the facility continues to serve its critical role in supporting the U.S. Navy, reinforcing our commitment to enhancing and protecting essential military infrastructure.
