NAVFAC – Rehabilitation of Town of Oyster Bay Nassau County Basin 495, Bethpage, NY
The COASTAL Project Team undertook the rehabilitation of Basin No. 495 located in Bethpage, NY, for NAVFAC, focusing on enhancing its functionality and accessibility. The project began with shutting down the Treatment System to let the basin dry out naturally. We then cleared the surrounding vegetation and stabilized the basin’s access road with recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), making it suitable for vehicle access.
Specific areas near the Broadway and Arthur Avenue outfalls required special attention. We removed surface material from a 24 ft. x 30 ft. area to a depth of approximately 1 1/2 ft. near the Broadway Outfall and similarly treated an area near the Arthur Avenue outfall. Both outfall storm drains were flushed with treatment plant effluent water, and the waste was disposed of off-site. A majority of the basin saw the removal of an average of six inches of surface material, with the excavated soil being reused on-site wherever possible.
To prevent erosion and support the infrastructure, we placed 10 tons of rip rap near the Broadway outfall and added sandy backfill over underground electric lines to restore their cover depth. A stainless steel staff gauge was also installed to monitor water levels from the access road, ensuring ongoing maintenance and monitoring of the basin’s condition. This project not only revitalized an essential water management asset, but also improved its resilience and operational efficiency.
